Day 30 - Do What You Love

Ultimately, the best cards are going to be the ones you love making.  I think it's particularly important for those people who mass produce their cards, either for themselves or for sale, to use items they love, otherwise it will quickly become a chore.

YOUR TURN:  Show me the cards you love to create.

Friday Winners!

Well done to everyone who has submitted a card this month, I can't believe how many entries there are!  You've obviously been working very hard and hopefully you've managed to build up a nice little stash of cards for the holidays.

Great idea! This would make life a lot simplier. Beautiful Card, I love it

Day 29 - Digital Images

It's probably not a surprise that digital stamps make my list, but I know I'm not alone in loving them.  They are versatile, inexpensive and come in a huge range that covers every possible card-making occasion, recipient, and theme.  They can be resized, flipped, digitally coloured, printed and merged... the freedom of digitals, and the ease of storage, is what really makes them popular with card makers.

YOUR TURN: Grab your favourite Christmas digital stamp and make a card.

Gorgeous card Beccy and it looks like a wintery night outside whilst warm and cozy inside. The tree lights look wonderfully effective too. Thank you for your continued inspiration this month, even if you did end up a bit like a Smurfette!

Day 28 - All About the Sentiment

Instead of relegating the sentiment to a little corner of your card place it as the focal point and make it the shining star!  Using just a sentiment is great if you need to make lots of cards quickly because you can set up a production line for the stamping then simply decorate with patterned paper and ribbon.

YOUR TURN: Create a card that has a sentiment as it's focal point.

Actually, your pudding brought a goofy smile to my face too (& I must admit also a little lump to my throat) My Mom always made Christmas pudding with yummy custard sauce....it just wasn't Christmas without it! This will be our first Christmas without that wonderful pudding. Thanks for stirring the lovely memories!
Hugs, Renee

Day 27 - Sparkle and Glow

I had a great time creating this single layer card... even though my hands looked like they belonged on a Smurf by the time I was finished!  I masked off the "window panes", sponged on lots of blue ink, stamped some trees and birds then added lots of glitter, shine and sparkle.  I was aiming for a wintery night with frosty windows and the soft glow of Christmas lights.  I don't know if that's exactly what I achieved but it's close enough to keep me happy!

YOUR TURN: Pull out all those bottles of glitter, glitz, sparkle and shine and create a card that glows and twinkles with holiday cheer!

This is so gorgeous and given me the inspiration to try something like this as I have JAC paper, Christmas dies and glitter. Now....I just need to find some time!

Day 26 - Memories of Yore

When I was a kid we used to make these little puddings out of card board or (if the school had a little extra money that year) felt fabric.  I don't know how many pudding cards, posters, brooches, decorations and pictures I dragged home to my parents over the years, but it sure was a lot!  My favourite part was always cutting out the drippy custard topping.

I hadn't thought about them for years until a recent Pinterest visit where I came across a cute little paper craft project by Lindsey Mortimer.  Well... out came the scissors and before I knew what was happening my fingers were cutting drippy custard and a goofy smile had plastered itself to my face!  I was transported back to my primary school days sitting in a hot classroom celebrating an Aussie summer Christmas with traditional cold climate images and loving every minute of it!

YOUR TURN:  Cast your mind back to the projects you did as a child, then bring them back to life in a Christmas paper craft project.  Let me know if a goofy smile crosses your face too!

Thanks for a great idea! And what do you know? It seems I am not the only one who had not thought of this technique. By the way, Beccy, thank you for all of your comments - it is great that you take the time to make each one a personal one.

Day 25 - All That Glitters...

Let's face it, nothing glitters like glitter!  And there is such a huge range of glitter on the market now, everything from diamond sparkle to a velvet finish, that you have something for every project you wish to create.

I made my card by die cutting circles and ornaments from Jac paper (double-sided adhesive paper) and sprinkling them with glitter.  I always press the glitter on with my finger then brush away the excess so it doesn't continue to fall off after the card is complete.

YOUR TURN: Get your glitter on!

I love snowflake cards. (you just have to look at the cards I've made this month to figure that out). Part of the reason I like them is that they make a nice generic card - useful for those of any religion (or non-religion) - at least for those of us who get snow at this time of year!

Day 24 - Emboss till you Drop!

There are two types of embossing - dry embossing and heat embossing.  Dry embossing can be done in a variety of ways, the most popular being the use of embossing folders and pressure to press a design into the cardstock.  Heat embossing generally involves the application of a powder that is heated until it melts leaving a polymer coating on the paper.

The card I made today uses both types of embossing.  Firstly, I dry embossed my piece of card with the Christmas words and snowman, then swiped a Versamark pad over the card laying down the ink on the raised portion of the design.  I added the embossing powder, heated the card and voila! my double embossing was done.

YOUR TURN: Emboss something!

Love this card, I'm so getting myself a snowflake die before next Christmas :)

Day 23 - Masking

Masking is a fairly common technique in paper crafting and can be done in various ways including the use of masking fluid, pre-cut paper or self-adhesive masks.  I created this card based on a beautiful creation I saw on Pinterest by Kate Morgan. I used pieces of printer paper to mask off the blue panel and the snowy hillsides, then stamped some trees, embossed some falling snow and finished with an organza ribbon and charm.

YOUR TURN:  Mask something... go on, you can do it!

Stunning ,love the colours . I feel like a swan on the water at the moment ,all calm on the top and chaos below. The next time you have such a wonderful idea could I please have 6 months notice ,joking aside it's great fun to play along and see all your beautiful creations.

Day 22 - Snowflakes

Snowflakes are beautiful, fragile, unique and something quintessentially Christmas - even here in Australia where we celebrate during the heat of summer!  There are lots of snowflake dies, stamps and punches available on the market, but it's not that hard to create your own version of a snowflake using items you already have in your stash.  The trick is to repeat the pattern around a central point, making about six "arms".  Frilly or swirly patterns seem to work best as they appear more fragile.

YOUR TURN: Create a card featuring snowflakes.

Beautiful card.love the flowers made from non traditional papers. I use flowers and butterflies to hide any mistakes! !!!! Have a creative, fun day. Xxxxx

Day 21 - Ribbon

The majority of card makers have vast collections of ribbon in their stash... myself included!  We use it to add beautiful bows, to hold charms and other embellishments, sometimes we stamp sentiments on it or even make little flowers from it.  It's a versatile and relatively inexpensive embellishment that can add a great deal to the overall composition of a card.

YOUR TURN: Raid your ribbon stash and create something beautiful!

So sweet, and nothing brings one back in time, than placing a coloured pencil in our hand, and starting to colour .....so relaxing....thanks for the memory!

Day 20 - Punches

I created this poinsettia card using a leaf punch and some patterned paper. Simply punch some leaves from green and red paper and layer them together with foam tape and glue.  You can add some little beads, pearls, buttons or dimensional paint to create the flower centre and cover up any messy edges.

YOUR TURN: Grab your favourite Christmas punch and use it to make a feature panel for the front of your card.

Day 19 - Coloured Pencils

The smell of coloured pencils takes me immediately back to my childhood and the years spent in the classroom sharpening, colouring and drawing with that wonderful collection of beautiful pencils.  I used to love the first day of school when all the pencils were still the same height and sharpened to a nice point.  By the end of the school year, certain colours were always little more than a nub... in my case, the black pencil... while some of them were almost as long as when you first started.

YOUR TURN: Time to connect with your inner child... stamp an image and colour it with pencils.

Gorgeous card Beccy - love the simplicity of the colours and the shape. I've previously used a "wonky circle" shape on an embossing board to created a "circular" card, but had never thought of using my Christmas embossing board (complete with baubles, angels, Christmas trees etc.) to make a shaped card. Now I just need more hours in a day, because my mind is racing with ideas!
Thank you for your continuing inspiration this month. I'm loving it!

Day 18 - Wreaths

I love wreaths.  I love drawing them, stamping them, colouring them and decorating them.  I also love making them and hanging them in my house at Christmastime.  My favourite kinds of wreaths are the ones that are made of bare branches that have been woven together and then decorated with berries or buttons.

I made this card with a gorgeous Memory Box die I picked up at the Brisbane Craft show in October.  I cut six of the shapes and layered them together to form the wreath base then decorated with some self-adhesive pearls.

YOUR TURN: Use items from your stash to create a wreath card.  It doesn't have to be a wreath to begin with, you can build up a circle with stamps, die cuts or punches and then decorate it with pearls, rhinestones, buttons or anything else you have on hand.

I use kraft ALL the time. LOVE it! It goes so well with almost any colour (especially blue!) and it can add a lovely vintage touch too. x

Day 17 - Shaped Cards

Creating shaped cards is a wonderful idea for Christmas because of all the different dies that are available on the market.  You can make sleigh shaped cards, tree cards, baubles, cards that look like puddings or gifts, holly cards, mitten cards or cards shaped like snowmen.

YOUR TURN:  Create a shaped card.

What a super idea this is...I'm sure everyone has a punch that would make a great wreath/bauble!

Day 16 - Kraft

Kraft cardstock has a warm neutral base making it a perennial favourite amongst card makers.  It works really well with the majority of colour schemes and I've seen it used for just about every occasion where a card is required.  I love using coloured pencils on kraft cardstock, particularly white, which stands out brilliantly against the natural colour of the card.

YOUR TURN: Create a Holiday card or tag using kraft coloured cardstock.

Tutorial: Wreath Card

Earlier I showed you a couple of Christmas cards that used flower shapes to create wreaths and baubles.  They are great cards to make when you don't have a lot of seasonal card-making items or when you want to extend the use of the items you already have in your stash.  And because they are so easy you can make a lot of them in a reasonably short time... which is great if you're only just getting your cards started!

1.  You will need a piece of white cardstock measuring 11" x 51/2" folded in half to form a card blank, a second piece of white cardstock measuring 5" x 5" and a scrap of card in your choice of colour for the punched flowers.

2.  From the piece of scrap card, punch out two sizes of flowers.  A large flower for filling up the area and a nice small flower to fill in any gaps.

3.  Place the 5" x 5" piece of cardstock on your scoreboard and score some border lines around the sides.  Keep them about 1/4" from the edges.

4.  Stamp a small sentiment in the very middle of the 5" x 5" piece of cardstock.  The size of the sentiment will determine how big your wreath needs to be.

5.  Use some double sided tape to adhere the 5" x 5" piece of cardstock to the centre front of the card blank.

6.  Find a circular item that can be used as a template for your wreath.  I find it's best not to draw a circle on the card as it's difficult to remove the pencil lines once you have all your flowers glued down.  I use a circle cutter but a roll of tape also works well.

7.  Spend some time figuring out how you are going to place your flowers.  It's easier to lay the large flowers around the circle first then fill in with the smaller ones.  They don't have to be evenly spaced, but you need to distribute them so that the wreath appears balanced.

8.  When you're happy with the way you have placed your flowers you can begin adhering them to the card with some wet glue.  I use Glossy Accents because it dries fast and is very strong.

9.  Once all your pieces are firmly glued down, it's time to decorate!  I used self-adhesive pearls in different shapes and sizes to give the impression of baubles, then finished off with a little ribbon bow.  Easy!

Friday Winners!

It seems I'm not very good at choosing just three winners for the weekly giveaway but I think it's mostly your fault!  Your cards have all been wonderful and I had no idea there would be so many entries.  I've had a fabulous time zooming around Blogland looking at all your work... I'm feeling very festive.

I managed, with great difficulty, to narrow it down to five beautiful cards.  Congratulations to Patti Painter (entry 16), Shirley Wilkie (entry 44), Kika (entry 88), Joyce Johnson (entry 99) and Sammy (entry 129).  Please visit my online store and choose either one set of digital stamps or three individual images that you would like and email me with your choice.

Day 15 - Non-Christmas Christmas Cards

If you aren't a person who needs to make a lot of Christmas cards each year and don't want to purchase lots of seasonal stamps and punches, you might like this card idea.  Simply use the punches you have on hand to build up Christmas shaped items such as wreaths, Christmas trees and baubles.

YOUR TURN: Grab a non-Christmas themed punch and assemble your own wreath, gift, or bauble card.

Day 14 - Buttons

I love buttons.  There's something decidedly homely about them.
I know lots of people who collect buttons in jars (myself included), and they're not necessarily old or ornate buttons, just those spare buttons that seem to float around the place just waiting for someone to pop them in a jar.  I spent a very pleasant half hour looking through my button jar for five red buttons to create this card.  I drew the holly leaves with a felt tip pen and then coloured them in with kids markers.

I'm really enjoying all of the different types of holiday cards you are posting, Beccy. This one particularly caught my eye as I love the different patterned papers you have used for your poinsettia which makes such a statement against the softly distressed background. Hugs, Lesley

Day 13 - Jingle Bells

How many Christmas Carols make mention of bells??  Silver bells, jingle bells, sleigh bells.... needless to say, they are very popular at this time of year and like every good card-maker I just happen to have a punch that can cut as many bells as I can use.  I'm sure most of you have bells of some description too, whether they're stamps, die cuts or punches like mine they really do come in handy for quick and easy embellishments.

YOUR TURN:  Ding Dong!  Find a bell and use it on your Holiday card.

New Release - Bauble Set

Would you believe I completely forgot about this release?!  With all the activity from the month of Christmas Cards it totally slipped my mind... thankfully I have a lovely team of designers who help keep me on my toes.  (Thanks Ema!)

Christine created this amazing card using
non-traditional Christmas colours.

Monika made two elegant cards showcasing
two of the baubles in the set.

Karin made these three beautiful cards using various
elements from the set.

Aurore created this cute little wine glass tag that
would be perfect for Christmas parties.
(My apologies - for some reason I couldn't get the image to turn upright -
please visit Aurore's blog for more images)

Ema created all these wonderful projects using the Bauble Set.
Don't you just love the collage she put together?

My New Place...

I've been really overwhelmed by all the entries this month, it's fabulous to see so many beautiful Christmas cards being created!  I'm particularly surprised by how many non-bloggers are wanting to get involved in the challenge, I feel terrible that you've been left out of the fun for so long.
So... I've created a second blog called Beccy's Guests.  It's a place where I will upload cards from those participants who don't have a blog of their own but still want to be involved in the monthly challenges.  All you have to do is email me a photo of your card and I will add it to the new blog and create a link to the challenge here.  Easy!
